South Sudan oil shutdown may create humanitarian crisis UN says

The shutdown of oil production in South Sudan could create a “humanitarian crisis situation” if the government has to cut vital services, said Valerie Amos, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

“If oil production is shut down many people will feel the effects,” she told reporters in Juba, the capital, today. "Humanitarian needs will inevitably increase and the combined efforts of the aid community, government and donors will not be sufficient.”

The UN is asking for at least $760 million from donors in aid to South Sudan this year, she said.
