The US State Department announced on Tuesday the appointment of a special representative to Sudan to promote US interests in the oil-rich African country.
"The Department of State announces the appointment of Roger P. Winter as special representative of the deputy secretary of State for Sudan," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in a statement.
"Mr. Winter's appointment reflects the high priority this administration attaches to halting the violence in Darfur and supporting implementation of the comprehensive peace agreement signed January 9th," McCormack said.
The spokesman said that Winter will be responsible for " advancing the achievement of America's goals for Sudan" that were promoted during the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's visit to Sudan last week and during Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick's three visits to Khartoum and Darfur in the months of April, June and July of this year.
