Sudan oil committee formed on oil sharing policy

Sudan, Politics, 11/1/2005

The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir formed a committee with the mission of drawing the country's oil policy and dividing its shares equally with the southern regions.

The formation of the committee which was decided on Sunday came in the course of implementing the peace agreement signed in January this year with the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) which has since joined the government.

Bashir will co-chair the presidency of the committee with the governor of southern Sudan, and this committee is to include on equal footing representatives for the central government, the south government, and the oil producing governorates.

The Sudanese official news agency SUNA said that the Sudanese President also formed a specialized committee in charge of implementing the peace agreement during the interim phase which will last for 6 years.

The agreement states to maintain a self- rule in the south and the people's movement to keep its army during the interim phase as well as drawing a new constitution for the country.

After the end of the interim phase, a referendum will be held in the south, composed of 10 areas, giving its people the choice between staying in Sudan or getting independence from it.

The Sudanese agency said that Bashir will also form other committees, according to the peace agreement including a national committee for the elections and a committee for human rights.
