Southern Sudan's first post-war cabinet to be installed

Nairobi (dpa) - Southern Sudan's first post-war cabinet is to be inaugurated in a ceremony in the region's capital Juba on Monday, according to the Sudanese Press Agency.

The Sudanese Peoples Liberation Movement (SPLM) leader and Sudan's Vice-President Salva Kiir who announced the formation of the government over the weekend, is expected to preside over the ceremony.

The widow of former SPLM leader and Sudanese Vice President John Garang is the new transport minister in the 18-minister cabinet which only has two women ministers. Out of an additional seven presidential advisors, only three are women.

Self-rule for the south is part of a peace deal signed in January this year, effectively ending more than 20 years of war between the former SPLM rebels and the northern Khartoum government.

The SPLM dominates the cabinet with 70% of the ministerial posts, while President Omer Hassan al-Bashir's ruling National Congress Party and other southern groups sharing equally the remaining positions.

According to the peace deal, the southern government which also boasts a legislative arm and its own constitution, can rule the oil-rich region for an initial six years before it holds a referendum on secession from the Khartoum government.
